The One Thing You Can Do Right Now That Will Change Your Life

You know deep down exactly what you need to do right now to get everything you ever wanted in business and life, but something is holding you back.

You've walked up to that line, ready to make a decision. You've contemplated it over and over again. You've sought advice. You've researched. You've explored various paths forward. You've stepped away from the line and back again numerous times.

It's not just one line. You have many of them. It could be a decision about a key initiative, a new hire at your company, or a challenging people issue. Maybe it's a goal to get healthy and start working out and eating right again. Or, you've been saying you'll better compartmentalize home and work, to spend more time with your family. 

Whatever those lines are for you — they don't go away.

They're always there, somewhat haunting you. When you continually choose not to step over the line, you see the negative consequences emerge. That vacant leadership team seat holds your growth back, that problem employee tears your organization apart silently, not working out and eating right causes your health and energy to decline, and you regret choosing work and busyness over spending your time with those most important to you in life.

Sound familiar? So, what is holding you back?

It's called you.

I get it. I've been there, we've all been there. 'You' are the one deciding (or not deciding) to do the things you know you need to do. 

It really is that simple.

You hold the keys.

You make the decisions.

You act or you don't.

The problem is that you are tired, overwhelmed, afraid of making the wrong decision, have too many options, and you doubt yourself. Or, you have a lack of energy, or plain and simply don't feel like it right now.

Well, it's your choice. If you keep standing behind that line, keep choosing not to decide, keep regretting not getting to where you hoped to be by now, then...

...nothing will change, unless you do.

I can speak passionately and openly about this subject because I've been there all too often. And, although there is a simple strategy to get better here, I know it's a journey and life is full of ups and downs. Yet, the choice still remains. Will you choose to change your course? Will you choose the path that may sometimes be harder for the moment, but will get you to where you know you need and want to be?

Personally, I've found a very simple way to step over that line and I can thank Mel Robbins for providing such an easy, yet powerful method of doing so. Mel says the reason we don't act, we don't decide is that we're wired not to and that 'we don't feel like it'.

So, how do you decide to change? To step over the line? 

Simple.

Just count down...

and then step over the line / start whatever it is...

For me, it's been transformational. I now decide to decide. I know the options. I've done my homework. I just didn't feel like getting out of bed or doing that hard thing I needed to do. So, I simply countdown and do it. I know the alternative and I don't like it. So, every time I think of telling myself, it's okay, I don't have to do it this time, I simply countdown and start. Once you've started, you're in and going. That's the key.

Don't get me wrong. Sometimes the countdown has to do with time to relax and spend time with family too. It's not all about productivity. In fact, it's the opposite. It's deciding to be productive in the time you've allocated for that. It's deciding to stop work and invest in your health and the people that matter to you. It's deciding to get a full night's sleep instead of thinking you're superman or superwoman every day. It's all of the above.
